Listening Lab extension: privacy policy

This policy covers the DanPicBook Listening Lab browser extension specifically. The controller is Danpicbook (CVR 46626702), Denmark. For the danpicbook.com account and website, see the main privacy policy. Questions: danpicbook@gmail.com.

1. The short version

The extension reads the Danish subtitles a video player is already showing and displays them with word-by-word highlighting and a translation. To translate, it sends that subtitle text to our server. Neither the subtitle text nor the translation is stored anywhere by us. It is processed and returned to your browser. The extension does not record audio, has no microphone or tab-capture permission, and carries no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. We never sell data.

2. What the extension accesses, and only when

Nothing happens until you click the headphones button on a page. The extension does not read, watch, or transmit anything before that, and it stops when you close the panel or leave the video.

• Subtitle text already on screen. On DR TV, Netflix and Disney+ the extension reads the subtitle line the player is currently displaying. It does not touch the video stream or any copy protection.
• An existing caption track.On YouTube it asks YouTube's own public caption endpoint for the video's Danish track and reads that.
• Playback positionof the page's own audio or video element, to keep the subtitles in time.
• Page title and address, only for the individual lines you choose to save, so a saved line remembers where it came from. Saved lines never leave your browser (see §5).

The extension never records the tab's audio and cannot: it does not hold Chrome's tabCapture permission. A page with no Danish subtitle track simply gets no subtitles.

3. What leaves your browser

• The subtitle text being translated right now.
• Your extension key, which identifies your subscription.
• Your IP address, as with any internet request, a random per-installation id, and the language codes you chose.

It goes to our relay server at relay.danpicbook.com, which forwards the text to Groq Inc.(United States) for machine translation into most languages. Translation into a few languages that Groq's model handles poorly is sent instead to OpenAI. The result comes straight back to your browser. Your browsing history is not collected, and pages you visit without pressing the button are never seen by us.

4. What we store on the server, and for how long

• Not the subtitle text or translations. They are returned to your browser and discarded.
• Your extension key and which account it belongs to, plus the translation languages you selected. Kept while your subscription exists.
• Which installation last used your key (the random id from §3, with a timestamp), so that one key is used on one device at a time, which our terms require. Overwritten each time; never linked to a name.
• IP addresses your key is used from, with a first-seen and last-seen time and a request count. This exists only to detect one key being shared between people. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in preventing abuse. Deleted automatically after 180 days.

5. What stays on your computer

The following are kept in the browser's own extension storage and are never uploaded to us or to anyone else:

• your extension key and the random installation id;
• your subtitle display preferences and chosen languages;
• your notebook, meaning every line you saved with the star button, together with its translations and the page it came from. Exporting it creates a file on your own computer.

Removing the extension deletes all of it.

6. Processors

• Groq Inc. (United States) — machine translation, for most languages, of the subtitle text described in §3.
• OpenAI — machine translation for the languages where quality demands a stronger model, and whenever Groq is unavailable.
• Render — hosting of the relay server.
• Neon — the database holding the items listed in §4.

Transfers outside the EU/EEA are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard. We do not sell or share data with anyone else, and none of it is used for advertising, for profiling, or for training any model of ours.

7. Versions before 0.9.9

Until 2 September 2026 the extension could also produce subtitles for video with no subtitle track by recording the sound the tab was already playing, in short pieces, with Chrome's tabCapture permission, and sending them to Groq Inc. for speech recognition. That feature was retired and removed from the extension in version 0.9.9. If you still run an older build, please update; while an older build is in use, the following also applies to it: audio pieces are held in memory only for the length of the transcription call and are never written to disk, the resulting text is not stored, and a daily count of seconds transcribed is kept for your account to apply the fair-use allowance. The extension never had microphone access in any version.

8. Your rights

You can ask for access to, correction of, or deletion of your data, object to processing, or request it in a portable format, by emailing danpicbook@gmail.com. You may also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.dk).

9. Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and a material change is announced in the extension itself.
