How to Use Your Anki Deck
Never used Anki before? This takes 5 minutes to read, then you're set to study on your own.
What Anki is, and why it works
Anki is a free flashcard app built around spaced repetition: words you remember easily get shown to you less often, words you keep forgetting get shown more often. Instead of re-reading a word list top to bottom every time, you spend your time exactly where you need it — more retention for the same amount of study time.
Step 1: Install Anki (free)
- Desktop (Windows / Mac / Linux): download free from apps.ankiweb.net.
- Android: search "AnkiDroid" in the Play Store — free.
- iPhone: search "AnkiMobile" in the App Store — this is the one official paid version (~$25), which funds Anki's development. If you'd rather not pay yet, use the desktop app or AnkiWeb in a browser instead.
Step 2: Import your deck
- After unlocking the matching vocabulary product on the site, download the .apkg file (the standard Anki deck format).
- Open the Anki desktop app: File → Import, then select the .apkg file you downloaded. On mobile, you can usually open the downloaded file directly "with AnkiDroid" / "with AnkiMobile" from your file manager or share sheet.
- Once imported, the deck appears in your Anki home screen's deck list, showing how many cards are in it.
Step 3: Study
Tap the deck name to start studying. Each card shows its front first (the Danish word or sentence) — try to recall the meaning yourself, then tap the card (or press Space) to flip it and see the answer plus the example sentence.
After flipping, you'll see 4 buttons: "Again," "Hard," "Good," "Easy" — answer honestly, since this decides when the card comes back. "Again" brings it back soon; "Easy" pushes it far into the future. Don't worry about picking wrong — the algorithm adjusts automatically over time.
Every card has pronunciation audio that plays automatically when you flip it (if you don't hear anything, check your device isn't muted, and that "auto-play audio" is enabled in Anki's settings).
A few tips
- A little every day beats a big session once in a while — Anki's algorithm is designed around daily review.
- To keep progress in sync across devices, create a free AnkiWeb account (ankiweb.net), sign into it on each device's Anki app, and tap "Sync."
- The deck is a one-time downloaded file, not auto-updating — if the word list is ever revised on the site, you'd need to re-download and re-import it.
